Calories estimation for running

April 21, 2023
In March, we introduced an estimation of the amount of calories burned during a run, displayed alongside the other statistics (distance, duration and pace). In this post, we explain why this information is valuable for runners, on which information it is based on and how PACE keeps it private.

Knowing how many calories are burned during a run provides meaninful information for different profile of runners. For an athlete training for a long distance race, such as a marathon, it helps to prepare the nutrition plan for the race day. For a person running for weight loss, it is a key data to help maintaining a calory deficient diet.

The amount of calories burned during a physical activity depends on the effort intensity (pace and duration). It is also different for each person as it depends on physiological factors such as the gender, the weight and the age.

Fitness trackers rely on the health information to provide an estimation. This is a piece of information about a person that is very personal and private. Like every other data in PACE, the health information is end-to-end encrypted to keep it private. The estimation of the amount of calories burned is calculated on the client side in order to prevent sending these data in their unencrypted form to the server. You can learn more about PACE works by reading our whitepaper.
